The Prime Video spin-off series Citadel: Diana deftly shifts between Diana’s past and present, offering a compelling portrait of our protagonist’s life before and after her entry into the shadowy spy syndicate Manticore, driven by a personal tragedy. Matilda De Angelis portrays Diana as both vulnerable and resolute, entangled in a revenge-driven narrative that ultimately leaves her stranded behind enemy lines. Amidst this turmoil, a power struggle unfolds between Edo and his father Ettore within Manticore. Edo seeks to reform the syndicate with a moral compass, while his father staunchly defends the status quo and competes for dominance among European factions.
Despite the hype surrounding the aftermath of the devastating events of Citadel, one might expect the streaming service to explore unrelated narratives. Nevertheless, alongside the Italian spin-off, Citadel: Honey Bunny, a Hindi spin-off, emerges to captivate attention by any means necessary. While the necessity of these stories remains questionable, the streaming giant appears committed to establishing its own spy universe. Yet, to its credit, the Italian series offers a less sensationalized and more gritty approach, delivering engaging content that resonates with viewers.
The Italian series is packed with emotional backstories and thrilling betrayals at every turn, keeping viewers engaged. However, the 45-minute episode length feels excessive at times, leading to occasional pacing issues that weigh down the narrative. Despite this, Citadel: Diana excels in comparison to its English counterpart starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden. It boasts a twisty plot that is well-thought-out, maintaining tension without relying on explosive spectacle.
That said, if you’re anticipating thrilling car chases and elaborate action sequences, Citadel: Diana may disappoint. While it includes moments of hand-to-hand combat and gunplay, the series opts for a more subdued approach rather than flashy spectacle.
