Chutney Sambar (DisneyHotstar) Review :-

When “Chutney Sambar” was first announced with Yogi Babu, there were concerns about it becoming another vehicle for body-shaming humor at his expense. While the series does fall into this trap to some extent, Karthik quickly intervenes to emphasize that Sachin (Yogi Babu) should not be subjected to body shaming, shifting the focus to other comedic elements. Though some one-liners land well, the show eventually evolves into a family drama with a distinctive premise and potential, staying true to Radha Mohan’s style.

“Chutney Sambar” bears Radha Mohan’s signature touch, featuring a cast of characters who generally harbor no ill will and face drama caused by their circumstances. Familiar faces like Vani Bhojan and Elango Kumaravel add to the ensemble. Set primarily in Ooty, the series follows Sachin’s journey from Chennai to participate in Rathnasamy’s final rites, providing a backdrop for its unfolding drama.

The late hotelier’s wife and daughter, along with the house cook Sophie (Vani Bhojan), remain unaware of Sachin’s (Yogi Babu) true identity. Meanwhile, Karthik, his brother-in-law Ilango (Nithin Sathya), and the helper Peter (Elango Kumaravel) work hard to keep his secret under wraps.

Radha Mohan introduces a range of secondary characters to build emotional connections and maintain interest throughout the series, adding depth and enhancing the drama with its multiple climaxes.

However, “Chutney Sambar” lacks the charm typically found in Radha Mohan’s films. Despite the filmmaker’s attempt to navigate a single central conflict, the series feels disjointed when it introduces key characters through their specialty dishes.

The symbolic intention behind featuring chutney and sambar—two complementary side dishes—suggests a deeper connection, yet the show leaves some potential unexplored.

Chutney Sambar (DisneyHotstar) Trailor :-

Some jokes fall flat, such as a scene where a child refuses to use the toilet out of fear that snakes might emerge from it, opting instead to urinate in a bucket in front of others. Such moments can come across as uncomfortable to watch.

Additionally, the series displays noticeable classism. Sachin runs a modest roadside eatery, while Karthik comes from a wealthy family, and the stark contrast between their social standings is evident. For instance, in one scene, Sachin, while drinking with the Anglo-Indian Peter, comments that it’s his first time drinking with someone who speaks English.

Chutney Sambar Verdict

Chutney Sambar is a serviceable series that, despite its dated storylines, manages to stay engaging. Radha Mohan makes a sincere effort to present a diverse array of characters coming together for a substantial and satisfying experience. Each character has a clear purpose, and they each receive their moment by the end of the series. While not everything hits the mark, Chutney Sambar remains a worthwhile one-time watch, suitable for background viewing while you go about your chores.
