Nushrratt Bharuccha returns in the sequel to the 2021 Prime Video film Chhorii, a thriller that left a lasting impression on audiences. Praised for its powerful storytelling and compelling performances, the original stood out for its chilling yet accessible take on female foeticide. What made Chhorii truly memorable was its seamless blend of social commentary and horror, delivered through a nuanced narrative that resonated deeply with viewers.
Sadly, Chhorii 2 fails to live up to the legacy of its predecessor. What was once a chilling and socially conscious horror film has now been reduced to a generic, undercooked sequel that feels more like a cash grab than a continuation of a powerful story. Instead of building on its original message, the film delivers an overlong barrage of aimless screaming and outdated jump scares that feel more tiresome than terrifying. In 2025, audiences expect more from horror than lazy frights—and this Prime Video sequel offers little in terms of relevance or depth.
The plot follows Sakshi, now raising her daughter alone. The child suffers from a rare condition that makes her allergic to sunlight, yet leads a content life until she’s abducted by her father and a cult of villagers who aim to sacrifice her to appease their revered “village head.” While the film attempts to tackle the important theme of women confronting and breaking the cycles of internalized patriarchy, the execution is so clumsy and disjointed that the message gets lost in the chaos. What could have been a bold, thought-provoking horror sequel instead becomes an exhausting watch that leaves you questioning not just the film’s choices—but your own patience.
The film’s biggest flaw lies in how seriously it takes itself, despite presenting scenes so absurd they border on parody. What could have been a gripping horror story is undermined by cheap, unnecessary visual effects, making the experience unintentionally comical. Plot holes and overused clichés plague the narrative, and the horror shifts clumsily from grounded realism to the supernatural—completely diluting the emotional weight of the subject matter. Child marriage, a deeply disturbing reality, is horrifying enough on its own. But the addition of Daasi Maa’s erratic “dark energy,” which literally bounces around the screen at times, feels so nonsensical it becomes borderline offensive.
The film also stumbles right out of the gate with an overlong recap of the first installment, delivered through a lazy and unimaginative exposition dump. It strips the story of any suspense, as characters constantly explain every thought and action instead of allowing the audience to interpret or engage with the material. As for the social messaging, it’s muddled and barely present for most of the runtime, only surfacing in the final stretch. Up until then, the focus is on stuffing the screen with as many shrieking Daasi Maa moments as possible in a desperate—and ultimately failed—attempt to evoke fear.

Chhorii 2 does have a few redeeming qualities, most notably in the performances. Nushrratt Bharuccha delivers a heartfelt and emotionally grounded portrayal of a mother fighting to protect her daughter, bringing genuine depth to an otherwise chaotic narrative. Soha Ali Khan does what she can with the material, but her character feels underwritten and hollow—serving more as a convenient villain than a fully realized woman with her own history of trauma or complexity.
Gashmeer Mahajani’s presence is puzzling at best. His character seems to exist solely to deliver clunky exposition before fading into the background for most of the film. As an inspector, he contributes little to the plot, and his role feels like an afterthought rather than an essential piece of the story.
Final Thought
Chhorii 2 is a major letdown. Rather than crafting a chilling and meaningful narrative around the horrors of child marriage and the cycle of abuse that women often endure—and sometimes perpetuate—the film loses focus and fixates on the wrong elements for far too long. By the time the genuinely disturbing moments finally arrive in the final stretch, it’s too little, too late. The impact is drowned out by over an hour of relentless, exhausting screaming that wears down both the nerves and the patience of the viewer.
