Call Me Bae (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

In 2023, Ishita Moitra’s ascent to fame through Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked a pivotal moment, finally granting writers the recognition they’ve long awaited. Thus, upon discovering Ishita Moitra’s involvement as one of the creators of Call Me Bae, I felt a surge of excitement. The trailer captivated me, hinting that the series might live up to its unapologetic promise. To sum it up, I am thoroughly impressed.

Ananya Panday embodies Bella Chaudhry in Call Me Bae, a Delhi socialite who describes herself as “born with a silver spoon.” The series begins with her expulsion from her husband’s mansion, the reasons initially obscure. However, a nuanced backstory swiftly unfolds, revealing that despite her academic achievements, Bella underwent “training” to fit into the role of a trophy wife, confronting the enduring influence of patriarchy across social classes.

Yet, beneath her privileged facade, Bella possesses a generous spirit, extending her people-pleasing nature to family, friends, and even her household staff—complete with an AI-based vacuum cleaner. Ultimately, the tale demonstrates that goodness can prevail, even in the face of unforeseen challenges that catch one off guard.

In Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Ranveer Singh’s character undergoes a coming-of-age journey, demonstrating that despite mistakes, there is always room for growth, and “cancel culture” isn’t the ultimate solution. This theme resonates in Call Me Bae, directed by Karan Johar, hinting at positive developments.

Bae’s journey of self-discovery in Mumbai unfolds subtly, avoiding overt coming-of-age clichés. Determined to rebuild her reputation through hard work, Bae’s past misstep, which some may debate ethically, leads to her expulsion from Delhi or being banned from the capital.

However, this turn of events proves to be a blessing in disguise, essential for the classic tale of rags to riches, a familiar trope in popular culture. Yet, amidst this, there’s a certain freshness that grips you throughout the eight episodes of the show.

There are moments that may seem audacious, like landing a job through a viral video. Yet, in a world where influencers are displacing formally trained journalists, who are we to question the shift?

Nevertheless, Ananya Panday captivates with her presence in this risky narrative the show embarks on. She doesn’t portray herself as a victim but rather inhabits a world where supportive individuals surround her, while adversaries remain mere background noise.

In 2019, I first experienced a similar shock while watching Gully Boy, where nearly the entire cast portrayed characters with good intentions and positive qualities. Call Me Bae continues this trend with characters initially influenced by Bae’s introduction, predominantly showcasing positivity. Similarly, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani highlights this goodness, with the majority supporting the union of the lead characters, except for a few displaying regressive views.

The series’ ensemble cast creates a compelling mix, akin to a delightful cocktail you can savor before the ice melts. Call Me Bae draws from familiar tropes found in YA dramas and coming-of-age stories like Clueless and Mean Girls. Despite occasional moments of fantasy, the narrative resonates truthfully within today’s world, where anything seems possible. This realism is underscored by the lurking presence of unseen adversaries who plot to disrupt lives from behind screens.

Call Me Bae (AmazonPrimeVideo) Trailor :-

The Hema Committee Report within the Malayalam film industry reignited the #MeToo movement, highlighting pervasive issues of sexual harassment that sadly come as no surprise. In today’s cultural discourse, it’s crucial to engage in these discussions, especially since celebrities often shy away from addressing such matters publicly.

Call Me Bae takes a bold step further by addressing a common societal fear: the apprehension of technology’s encroachment into our personal lives, monetizing our data and engendering a constant state of unease even as we continue to rely on our mobile devices.

While these themes are weighty and can provoke discomfort, the series navigates them with a balanced approach. It integrates humor and dramatic flair without trivializing or insensitively portraying these serious issues. Moreover, the series deserves credit for spotlighting these real-world concerns and positioning them as integral elements of its narrative, with Bae herself serving as a catalyst for bringing them to a broader audience.

She finds steadfast support from the rest of the cast, beginning with Saira (Muskkaan Jaferi), her first friend in Mumbai who evolves into her closest confidante. Tammarrah enters the picture initially as a self-centered, career-focused individual but gradually transforms into a supportive presence. Together, the three form an inseparable trio and establish their own “sisterhood code,” leaving a lasting impact with their performances.

Similarly, the trio of male actors—Gurfateh Pirzada, Vihaan Samat, and Varun Sood—each bring unique dynamics to Bae’s life, creating a dynamic interplay that unfolds unpredictably. They inject romance and levity into the storyline without reducing their characters to mere ornaments.

If you were to ask me who left the deepest impression throughout the series, it would undoubtedly be Vir Das. Playing the role of Satyajit, a tough and narcissistic primetime news anchor, Das portrays a character unafraid to look down upon anyone. Known as one of the country’s funniest comedians, seeing him embody such a contrasting, anti-heroic persona is a true delight.

Switching gears to Ananya Panday, I’ve been following her career closely since Gehraiyaan and her earlier film, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan. She has skillfully chosen roles that suit her age and personality, adeptly navigating her acting abilities. While acknowledging her strengths as a performer, it’s clear she has shouldered the series with resilience, akin to her character. Her portrayal may bring to mind Alexis from Schitt’s Creek, with her privileged demeanor casually mentioning brands and celebrities as if they meet for coffee daily. Yet, Ananya’s charm lies in her ability to both intimidate and impart lessons about not judging superficial appearances.

Much like Bae’s affinity for the owl as her “spirit animal,” she metaphorically possesses the insight to perceive what others may overlook. The series further depicts her character with a mysterious aura, juxtaposed against her outward identity as a fashion icon.

Collin DCunha directed all eight episodes, reaffirming my belief in empowering young filmmakers to tell stories about youth, echoing Karan Johar’s approach with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai 25 years ago. DCunha excels in this role, proving his prowess admirably.

Final Thoughts

Call Me Bae seamlessly blends wit, heart, and incisive social commentary into a stylish package that captivates. Ananya Panday excels as the titular Bae, evolving from a privileged princess into a formidable force. Beyond its fashionable appeal, the series courageously tackles themes of patriarchy and privacy in our modern, technology-driven society.
