Bugonia Review :-
The term Bugonia comes from an ancient myth describing “the spontaneous generation of bees from the carcass of a dead ox.” As peculiar as it sounds, the film’s plot is just as bizarre—and equally captivating.
The story begins with Teddy teaching his neurodivergent cousin Don (Aidan Delbis) about bee behavior, fully indoctrinating him into his worldview. Together, they execute one of the most audacious kidnappings imaginable, abducting Michelle Fuller, the ruthless CEO of Auxolith, a pharmaceutical giant developing controversial and radical drugs. Teddy is convinced that Michelle is part of an alien species, the “Andromedans,” infiltrating Earth. He believes that during the upcoming lunar eclipse, her mothership will return—and that he will finally meet its royal emperor. Fueled by this delusion, Teddy subjects Michelle to both psychological and physical torment, all while trying to rationalize his actions to Don.
Dark comedies this twisted rely on powerhouse performances, and Bugonia delivers on that front. While Will Tracy’s screenplay gradually builds momentum, Yorgos Lanthimos draws out exceptional performances from his cast. Emma Stone is chillingly composed as the unyielding CEO, while Jesse Plemons is magnetic as the obsessive, unhinged idealist straddling the line between genius and madness. Their interactions spark an electric tension, turning even the most absurd scenarios into gripping, psychologically charged moments. Aidan Delbis provides emotional depth as the impressionable Don, offering quiet vulnerability amid the chaos.
Bugonia Trailor :-
Despite its standout performances, Bugonia sometimes buckles under its own eccentricity. Certain captivity scenes involving Michelle feel drawn out, and the slow-burn pacing occasionally saps the tension. The final act, while strikingly surreal and poetic, doesn’t fully match the intensity of the film’s buildup. A richer exploration of the characters’ backstories might have added more emotional depth to the story.
Final Thought
Still, Lanthimos’s direction, paired with Robbie Ryan’s stark, minimalist cinematography and Jerskin Fendrix’s haunting score, crafts an unsettling, theatrical world that feels both absurd and mesmerizing. Ultimately, Bugonia is less about aliens and more about humanity — a sharp satire on corporate greed, blind faith, and the self-destructive absurdity of modern life. It’s strange, wild, and deliberately elusive, yet impossible to look away from.
