Netflix’s celebrated 19th-century drama “Bridgerton” returns with the first part of its third season, promising a sumptuous and captivating experience for viewers. Season 3 unfolds as a new wave of debutantes enters the competitive marriage arena, aiming to catch the eye of Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) while the latest scandalous revelations from Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) circulate.
In this initial segment of Season 3, familiar characters take center stage, fostering new bonds and exploring evolving relationships that breathe fresh life into the series. At the heart of these transformations lies Penelope Featherington (portrayed by the exceptional Nicola Coughlan), whose journey shapes much of the narrative.
Returning to London after a summer retreat in the countryside, Penelope finds herself in familiar surroundings but amidst a sea of change. Estranged from her once-close friend Eloise (Claudia Jesse) following their tumultuous fallout in Season 2, and hurt by Colin’s (Luke Newton) insensitive remarks, Penelope feels like an outsider. Despite finding solace in her clandestine role as Lady Whistledown, she is increasingly weary of her manipulative mother, Portia (Polly Walker), and her judgmental sisters, Prudence (Bessie Carter) and Philippa (Harriet Cains). Determined to take control of her destiny, Penelope resolves to secure a husband. Penelope’s first challenge is to revamp her wardrobe, bidding farewell to her youthful citrus-colored gowns. Embracing a new aesthetic, she adorns herself in elegant baby blue and seafoam green silks, meticulously crafted by “Bridgerton” costume designer John Glaser. With her red hair styled in soft waves and delicately sculpted baby hairs by the skilled hands of hair and makeup artist Erika Ökvist, Penelope undergoes a stunning transformation. However, mastering the art of conversation with potential suitors proves to be a skill that cannot be purchased from the modiste.
While Penelope grapples with self-doubt, Colin exudes confidence, effortlessly charming the women vying for his affections upon his return to London after months of travel across Europe. Eager to mend their fractured relationship, Colin offers to assist Penelope in refining her flirting techniques. Yet, as Penelope’s newfound confidence attracts the attention of the enigmatic and alluring Lord Debling, Colin begins to see her in a different light.
The undeniable chemistry between the leads in “Bridgerton” and “Queen Charlotte” has garnered praise, but the evolution of Colin and Penelope’s bond from platonic to passionate infuses their journey with a captivating intensity. While Polin remains firmly in the spotlight, new showrunner Jess Brownell and her team of writers introduce captivating subplots that delve into the intricacies of characters previously on the narrative fringes. Francesca, the music-loving sixth Bridgerton sibling, steps onto the marriage market, revealing her own perspectives on love and partnership amidst the backdrop of her stunning presence akin to her older sister, Daphne.
Similarly, the blonde and statuesque Cressida Cowper endeavors to secure a husband for the third consecutive year. Like all women in the Ton, her future hinges on securing a suitable marriage proposal, a daunting challenge.
