In the second season (technically third, considering R Madhavan’s portrayal), the psychological thriller initially struggles to find its momentum, despite the heightened stakes and increased narrative complexity. With the introduction of Victor as J’s accomplice and officer Kabir Sawant’s return to thwart the serial killings, the tension builds as each episode delves into the backstory of Avinash’s victims and the rationale behind their demise.
While the direction and treatment of the show maintain a gripping allure, certain plot developments feel contrived, and character motivations appear inconsistent. For instance, Abha’s lack of remorse over committing murder and J’s convoluted schemes to manipulate Kabir and others detract from the overall coherence of the narrative.
Abhishek Bachchan delivers a compelling performance, showcasing his range as both Avinash and J, while Amit Sadh’s portrayal of Kabir Sawant exudes brooding intensity. However, supporting characters like Nithya Menen and Saiyami Kher are underutilized in comparison to the previous season. It is Naveen Kasturia who shines with his portrayal of Victor, adding depth to the ensemble cast.
Despite its flaws, “Breathe: Into the Shadows” Season 2 retains some allure, with shorter episodes and a tighter screenplay potentially enhancing the viewing experience. Ultimately, the series remains worth a watch for its performances and the underlying tension that drives the narrative forward.
