The film is based on the character Bob Biswas from Sujoy Ghosh’s 2012 hit, Kahaani, where Saswata Chatterjee portrayed the insurance agent who also moonlighted as a contract killer. Bob meets his demise while attempting to assassinate Vidya Balan’s character, Vidya Bagchi, in Kahaani.
Written by Sujoy Ghosh and directed by his daughter Diya Annapurna Ghosh, Bob Biswas is a prequel to Kahaani.
The film kicks off similarly to its predecessor, opening in a factory warehouse where a drug named ‘Blue’ is being manufactured for young students.
Bob, grappling with his post-coma life, rediscovers his darker inclinations. Despite working as an insurance agent, he excels at executing his assigned targets, triggering flashbacks from his past during one of his missions.
The screenplay weaves an engaging narrative around Bob, maintaining the essence of Kahaani while exploring the character further. Set in Kolkata, the film occasionally lags but remains captivating overall, thanks to Diya’s direction.
Chitrangda Singh portrays Mary with simplicity and grace, effectively conveying the complexities of her character. The inclusion of actors from the East, such as Paran Bandopadhyay and Pabitra Rabha, adds authenticity to the Kolkata setting.
Abhishek Bachchan shines as Bob Biswas, effortlessly embodying the role from start to finish. Whether portraying Bob’s confusion upon leaving the hospital, his desperation while disposing of a body, or his slick maneuvers during a mission, Abhishek nails every aspect of the character.
Abhishek’s commitment to his role elevates the film, earning him extra praise for his exceptional performance as Bob Biswas.
The soundtrack complements the narrative, and Clinton Cerezo’s background score enhances the suspense. Gairik Sarkar’s cinematography contributes to the film’s distinct visual appeal.
Despite a few flaws and falling short of the brilliance of Kahaani, Bob Biswas remains a gripping thriller worth watching.
