We’re all familiar with Bitcoin’s meteoric rise, especially in 2021, followed by its sudden crash. Celebrities like Tom Brady and Kim Kardashian endorsed it, fueling the belief that cryptocurrencies were the future of financial success.

Do you recall anyone discussing Bitcoin in 2017? They either struggled to explain it or sounded like they were promoting a pyramid scheme. However, Bitcoin and other cryptos weren’t inherently fraudulent; they were simply novel concepts yet to fully mature.

Now, let’s delve into how this context unfolds in the 2024 Netflix documentary “Bitconned.” The film chronicles the ascent and downfall of Centra Tech, with a focus on its founder, Ray Trapani. A South Beach businessman, Ray used his family’s funds to establish businesses like luxury car rentals for celebrities such as Rick Ross and DJ Khaled.

According to Ray’s colleagues, he’s a manipulative individual who lacks original ideas and is often under the influence. The documentary begins by detailing Ray’s involvement in the drug trade during his teenage years, where he cooperated with authorities to evade punishment.

Later, Ray’s financial ventures fail, leading him to venture into the crypto world with his unlikable business partner, Sohrab Sharma, aka “Sam Sharma.” Their goal was to develop a debit card allowing Bitcoin millionaires to access their profits easily.

Enter Centra Tech, Ray’s brainchild, initially appearing dubious with its promotional videos resembling those of sketchy marketing firms. Despite this, Centra Tech gains traction, even fabricating a CEO. However, their charade unravels when exposed by the New York Times.

“Bitconned” humorously documents Centra Tech’s rise and fall, portraying Ray as a cunning villain reminiscent of characters in TV shows. He repeatedly evades consequences, despite his fraudulent actions. Ultimately, while his partners face jail time, Ray purchases a new home.

“Bitconned” may seem like another Netflix documentary about the collapse of the American dream, but it’s worth watching. It’s a captivating narrative of greed and the perception that the system is rigged, with individuals like Ray pushing back against it, albeit unscrupulously.
