Bison - Kaalamaadan Review :-

Bison Kaalamaadan is the newest entry in the Mari Selvaraj Cinematic Universe. While the director’s films don’t follow a single storyline, they are linked by a consistent emotional and ideological thread. First things first—Bison isn’t among his strongest works. Yet, based on the life of kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan, the film remains impactful and carries the unmistakable mark of its accomplished creator.

The filmmaker’s fascination with animal metaphors continues in this film, starting with the title itself: Bison. Beyond that, the ‘Bison’ truly comes alive in Kittan’s (Dhruv Vikram) body language during fights and crucial kabaddi matches.

The kabaddi sequences are gripping and cinematically well-executed, while cinematographer Ezhil Arasu K captures the rustic intensity of the protagonist’s turbulent life. Nivas K Prasanna’s music doesn’t seek to stand out but instead blends seamlessly into the world of the film. Clocking in at nearly three hours, Bison is long and packed with characters. Some of the later-introduced characters, however, fail to evoke the same emotional resonance as those introduced earlier.

Bison isn’t just Kittan’s journey—it’s also about his bond with his father, portrayed movingly by Pasupathy. Their relationship forms the heart and soul of the film. Madankumar Dakshinamoorthy also deserves a special mention for his role as Kittan’s mentor. The teacher-student connection they share is genuinely endearing, even if it fades into the background in the latter part of the film.

Bison - Kaalamaadan Trailor :-

Ameer and Lal demonstrate how strong actors can elevate a role simply with their presence. Rajisha Vijayan and Anupama mostly observe the unfolding events, but they perform well within their limited scope. The only drawback is Rajisha’s dubbing—opting for a generic voice undermines the film’s earthy tone. Dhruv Vikram deserves applause for his physical transformation and solid performance, though he shines far more in scenes of intensity or aggression than in emotional outbursts.

Final Thought

The film handles transitions from black-and-white to color and from past to present with finesse. It’s easy to root for the protagonist, given the countless obstacles he faces. Yet, both Bison and Kittan often feel emotionally distant. Several times, the film fails to convey what’s happening in Kittan’s mind or how he’s processing the events around him. While his physical reactions are visible, his inner emotions remain elusive.
