Bhool Chuk Maaf (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

The release journey of Bhool Chuk Maaf oddly mirrored its own theme—shifting from theatrical to OTT and back again, going in circles much like its story, which tests your patience with a scattered and wandering buildup.

Set in Banaras, the film follows sweethearts Ranjan (Rajkummar Rao) and Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi), who are so wrapped up in each other they seem oblivious to adult responsibilities. Ranjan is unemployed, and Titli is too carefree to worry. When they decide to elope, they back out halfway, realizing it would unfairly hurt their parents. They’re determined to be together, but not at the expense of their families’ happiness.

In an unexpected turn, Ranjan makes a solemn vow to secure a government job within two months—a condition set by his father. Initially carefree, the couple relies on quick fixes (‘jugaad’) to navigate life successfully, until Ranjan becomes ensnared in a mysterious time loop that prevents him from reaching his wedding day.

Rajkummar Rao has recently starred in several films with similar themes. “Bhool Chuk Maaf” distinguishes itself with unique elements amidst a somewhat familiar framework. Noteworthy nuances in the screenplay shine through, particularly in its portrayal of family dynamics and eccentric characters, reminiscent of the north Indian charm seen in “Bareilly Ki Barfi” yet possessing its own distinct identity. Ranjan’s complex relationship with money, influenced directly by his father (Raghubir Yadav), who relies entirely on his wife Seema Pahwa’s pickle business as the family’s sole provider, stands out. Similarly, Ranjan freely spends Titli’s borrowed funds without a thought of financial independence until circumstances force him to confront his responsibilities.

The first half drags a bit, taking too long to reach the main point, weighed down by numerous songs that feel unnecessary and out of place. The humor remains mostly clean and harmless, aside from the occasional crude ‘tatti jokes.’ However, it’s the second half that truly shifts gears. This is where the film dives into deeper themes—highlighting growing apathy, isolation, and self-centered living. It thoughtfully questions the broader impact of our ‘jugaad’ mindset on society and asks when exactly we stopped caring. The social commentary, delivered through humor, is fresh and well-crafted. You just can’t help but wish the film had arrived at these insights sooner.

As a remarkably talented actor, Rajkummar Rao deserves roles that challenge him to stretch his abilities, and while Bhool Chuk Maaf doesn’t break new ground for him, he still brings Ranjan to life with all his flaws and heartfelt nuance.
