In Apple TV+’s latest psychological thriller series, the strange and mysterious bond between Eli and Noah keeps viewers engaged throughout much of the runtime. The storyline is dark and perplexing, as Noah’s sudden arrival disrupts Eli’s life and introduces a chaotic mystery that promises intrigue. The complex relationship between Eli and Noah lies at the heart of the narrative, with uncovering their connection becoming a significant pursuit.

The series is an unusual blend, feeling fantastical and distant by the midpoint. While fiction often embraces the bizarre, the commitment to a science-based approach creates a sense of confusion as viewers wonder how these events could realistically unfold. Before is puzzling and disorienting, shifting from one reincarnation story to another, and inexplicably taking us to a “before” where a child’s accidental action leads to unnecessarily convoluted outcomes.

he issue isn’t that the story is fantastical—that aspect is completely fine. The problem lies in the fantasy being so unbelievable that it leaves you questioning what’s really happening in the show. Eli and Noah are said to share a deep connection from a past life, with trauma that spans multiple lifetimes. However, the resolution of their connection feels far-fetched and underwhelming, contrasting sharply with the initial promise of the series.

I also found some character decisions to be frustratingly implausible. The series often fails to thoroughly explain certain choices and situations, making them feel random and leading to unnecessary drama. While the characters themselves are well-developed, and this is a character-driven show that explores their minds and motivations, there always seems to be something missing. Coupled with the odd narrative, this creates a strange viewing experience.

By the end, viewers might wonder whether everything was just a trick of the mind or if it truly happened. The implications are intriguing, and the possibilities are endless. I felt that exploring a different angle could have made a stronger impact than the childhood friendship trauma portrayed. While I didn’t hate the show and found several moments captivating, overall, the series feels half-baked and overly dramatic by its conclusion, yet it doesn’t fully embrace that direction.

Final Thought

In the end, Before prompts contemplation about the power of the mind, yet at times it feels like it throws in various elements just to shock us. There are moments that genuinely grip and move you, but overall, the series missed the mark for me, even though the performances shine in every frame.
