Barzakh (Zee5) Review :-
Starring Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, Barzakh offers an experience that demands full engagement. While it might leave you emotionally fragmented, this series is one that lingers long after the credits roll.
In many ways, Barzakh feels like a natural extension of Asim Abbasi’s 2018 film Cake, which explored family dynamics and old grievances through the lens of two sisters reuniting in Karachi.
This new six-episode series, now streaming on Zee5 and Zee Zindagi’s YouTube channel with new episodes released every Tuesday and Friday, delves into similar themes of fractured families, hidden resentments, and long-buried secrets. However, Barzakh distinguishes itself with its unique tone and setting. Set against breathtaking mountainous landscapes, the series weaves through realms of myth and reality, seamlessly transitioning between past and present. It invites viewers to ponder the boundaries between our world and the realms beyond, driven by layers of perception and desire.
Fans eagerly awaiting the reunion of Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, who dazzled audiences in the hit show Zindagi Gulzar Hai, will find their chemistry captivating once again. Barzakh places them at the heart of a narrative rooted in Abbasi’s deep and thoughtful exploration of life and death, while presenting complex, emotionally charged characters.
Barzakh (Zee5) Trailor :-
Seventy-six-year-old Jafar Khanzada (Salman Shahid) lives in the enigmatic Land of Nowhere, where he oversees his resort with the company of Scheherazade (Sanam Saeed), a mysterious daughter with unclear origins. Despite his stubbornness and deteriorating mental state, Jafar is preparing to break his self-imposed isolation by summoning his estranged sons, Shehryar (Fawad Khan) and Saifullah (Fawad M Khan), to witness his ‘third and final’ marriage to a woman who remains unseen and unknown. Is she a real person, or just a figment of his fading mind?
The setup promises a rich drama where human frailties are interwoven with mystical elements. Director Asim Abbasi avoids heavy exposition, immersing us in a world populated by otherworldly figures in pink robes and strange, old wives’ tales. However, the deliberate pacing and the ethereal atmosphere sometimes risk feeling overly precious, detracting from the intended profundity.
Fortunately, the compelling storytelling, strong performances, and stunning scenery (with outstanding production design) more than compensate for any shortcomings. Fawad Khan, maintaining his irresistible charm, is as captivating as ever, while Sanam Saeed remains equally enchanting. The series features impressive child actors, particularly nine-year-old Haaris (Syed Arham); Abbasi’s refusal to dumb down their roles makes them genuinely engaging. Fawad M Khan shines as Saifu, and Franco Giusti’s portrayal of the suave Italian chef adds a layer of charm with his culinary skills and demeanor. Salman Shahid’s portrayal of the patriarch is especially powerful, his unraveling adding significant depth.
To fully appreciate the world-building in Barzakh, produced by Shailja Kejriwal and Waqas Hassan, one must immerse themselves in its unique universe. Though it might challenge viewers and occasionally leave them feeling fragmented, this series is likely to linger in the mind, provoking thought about both what is revealed and what remains unsaid.
“Barzakh” is now streaming on Zee5.
