In this French action-thriller, Vincent Cassel brings his signature eccentricity to the role, set against a backdrop of pulsating techno beats. While the film takes its time to get going—risking some early monotony—Banger eventually finds its rhythm, delivering an entertaining ride that’s quirky, amusing, and just a little bit chaotic.

The story centers on Scorpex, a washed-up DJ clinging to the faded glory of his once-mesmerizing beats. Long past his prime and largely forgotten, he stubbornly refuses to fade into obscurity. But when he’s unexpectedly recruited to befriend—and ultimately betray—a younger, rising rival, Scorpex is forced to confront his own delusions and rediscover his spark. The mission may just be the reality check he never saw coming.

What truly elevates Banger is the inner turmoil of Scorpex. His desperate need for recognition and validation fuels the narrative, making his journey both compelling and a little tragic. Torn between fulfilling his mission and reigniting his faded career, Scorpex embodies a fascinating duality—he’s both a man on a mission and one chasing the ghost of his former self. This tension makes him a standout protagonist, even if at times he borders on the pathetic. Vincent Cassel delivers a stellar performance, effortlessly blending Scorpex’s brooding intensity with his eccentric surroundings.

Mister V plays Vestax, Scorpex’s younger, more successful rival who embodies everything Scorpex once aspired to be. There’s envy in Scorpex’s gaze, but also a strange admiration, making their dynamic unexpectedly rich. Their scenes together—especially their offbeat collaborations—inject the film with sharp humor and unpredictable energy. Mister V is a riot on screen, easily the wilder of the two, and a perfect foil to Cassel’s weary intensity.

Where Banger stumbles is in its crime-thriller aspect. There’s little suspense or urgency—the stakes never feel truly high, and the tension never quite lands. While the music is consistently electric and the film leans heavily into its offbeat humor and awkward charm, the plot never generates real momentum. You’re never genuinely worried for Scorpex; Cassel feels protected by plot armor throughout. Much of the runtime is spent in dialogue-heavy scenes that sap the pacing, flattening any sense of mounting danger.

Still, the film’s quirky characters and eccentric tone go a long way in compensating for the lack of thrills. It’s less about the pulse-pounding excitement of the chase and more about watching Cassel’s character navigate his messy, self-inflicted journey. Fortunately, the ending pulls everything together, offering a touch of redemption and emotional payoff. If you go in expecting a fun, music-fueled ride rather than a nail-biting thriller, Banger delivers—leaving you chuckling and maybe even dancing as the credits roll.
