This creation by Ekta Kapoor, produced by Tanveer Bookwala, kicks off with a breakup between a gay couple, leaving Liz (portrayed by Ridhi Dogra) heartbroken. Over the course of 10 episodes, viewers are taken on a journey through contemporary relationships, which are often more complex than they appear. In the initial episodes, Badtameez Dil follows the familiar rom-com formula, with Liz, a writer, becoming roommates with Karan Singh Rathod (played by Barun Sobti), who believes that societal norms, rather than instinct, dictate human monogamy. Despite their differences, Liz finds solace in Karan’s companionship as she struggles with heartbreak, while Karan grapples with loneliness.

The early episodes are laden with clichés—a self-conscious protagonist with a glamorous older sister, Hailey (portrayed by Minissha Lamba), who seemingly outshines her in every aspect, including romantic pursuits. However, as the plot unfolds, the focus shifts to Liz’s journey of self-discovery and personal growth following her separation from Karan. While the writing by Ritu Bhatia and direction by Prashant Baghia initially falter, they gain momentum as Liz and Karan’s relationship evolves.
Subsequent episodes delve into the complexities of human relationships, exploring dynamics between the protagonists and other characters such as Karan’s friend Elena (portrayed by Malika Dua) and later his fiancée Anjali (played by Hailey Vyas), as well as Liz’s relationship with her new boyfriend Sameer (portrayed by Alekh Kapoor). However, the exploration of Karan’s unresolved childhood issues, shaping his present persona, could have been further developed.
Ridhi Dogra and Barun Sobti deliver captivating performances, portraying characters with tremendous chemistry whether as friends or potential lovers. Barun’s portrayal, in particular, stands out as he navigates challenging situations with a smirk. Minissha Lamba impresses as the spirited Hailey, while Suparna Marwah adds comic relief as Liz and Hailey’s matchmaker mother.
Filmed primarily in Belgrade, Serbia, Vladimir Ilic’s cinematography elevates the series, complemented by soulful tracks.
While the intricate plotlines may become burdensome over time, the series remains engaging for viewers drawn to drama and romance. It’s worth watching for the stellar performances of Ridhi Dogra and Barun Sobti.
