Bada Naam Karenge (SonyLiv) Review :-
Set across Ratlam, Mumbai, and Ujjain, Bada Naam Karenge is truly a family drama, as Sooraj Barjatya mentioned in interviews. Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar, portraying Rishabh and Surbhi, effortlessly win hearts with their undeniable on-screen chemistry.
The series kicks off amidst the chaos of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Rishabh, the son of the renowned Shree Ganga Misthaan Bhandaar owner in Ratlam, resides in Mumbai for his studies and job. He meets Surbhi when he organizes a party at his Mumbai flat. Surbhi, a biology student, stays at a girls’ hostel near her college. Though they don’t know each other well, after a few drinks, Surbhi feels unwell and ends up accidentally spending the night at Rishabh’s place. Meanwhile, news breaks that the Prime Minister of India has announced a 21-day lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.

As a result of the lockdown, all transportation is banned except for urgent cases. Surbhi, who had fallen asleep, is unaware of this and wakes up the next morning to find she can’t leave Rishabh’s house due to the restrictions. This unexpected situation marks the beginning of Rishabh and Surbhi’s blossoming love story.
Don’t miss Jitendra Kumar’s delightful cameo as the owner of Choco and Cinnamon. He brings his signature charm, reminiscent of his role as Jeetu Bhaiya in Kota Factory, to the character of Santosh Khandelwal. Although he appears for just about 10 minutes, his presence is unforgettable and wins our hearts once again.
The direction and screenplay warm the heart, as they capture the story in a refreshingly real way. However, before their love can fully develop, Surbhi has to return to her home in Ujjain after receiving news that her father suffered a minor heart attack.

At times, the series reminds me of Gong Yoo’s Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. Remember how Goblin wrote a poem for his missing soulmate, using romantic imagery like rain, snow, and leaves? In Bada Naam Karenge, Surbhi writes a similar poem, saying, “We will meet again someday. How, where, I don’t know. But we will meet.” She uses the same poetic references, and this scene will undoubtedly make you fall in love with the on-screen couple.
Years later, Rishabh and Surbhi cross paths again, but this time, their families have arranged their marriage without knowing they’ve already met. When they meet at a restaurant, both are shocked, but they choose not to reveal their history to their families. The series beautifully portrays the blend of love and arranged marriage. Sooraj Barjatya, known for his family classics like Vivah, Hum Saath Saath Hai, and Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, brings a heartwarming family dynamic together with a modern Gen Z love story to the OTT platform.

Bada Naam Karenge also delves into the struggles younger family members face when the older generation imposes their will on them. Much like in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, where Amitabh Bachchan’s Yash Raichand gets upset with his adopted son Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) for wanting to marry a middle-class woman, Anjali (Kajol), the elder members in the family dictate the rules without considering what others truly want. Similarly, in Bada Naam Karenge, Rishabh’s uncle (played by Kanwaljit Singh) evokes memories of Big B’s characters in K3G and Mohabbatein. However, as the story progresses, the younger members make the elders realize that they, too, can be wrong.
When the families discover that Rishabh and Surbhi already know each other, they are upset and angry. After many ups and downs, Rishabh’s strict family begins to understand that their anger is only damaging their family ties. The series is rich in its dialogue, music, and standout performances. While some scenes may feel a bit stretched, they’re quickly overshadowed by the romantic storyline. The final scene of Bada Naam Karenge will melt your heart and leave you wishing for an in-law family like theirs.
Final Thought
Bada Naam Karenge, directed by Palash Vaswani, marks Sooraj Barjatya’s debut on OTT. The Gen Z love story between Rishabh and Surbhi offers a refreshing glimpse of genuine romance in an era dominated by technology and AI. The SonyLIV series, starring Ritik Ghanshani and Ayesha Kaduskar, beautifully portrays the couple navigating love while balancing the expectations of their families. With 9 episodes, the series never feels overly long, although at times the pacing can feel a bit slow. Despite that, the overall plot keeps you engaged. If you’re looking for a heartwarming family romance drama this Valentine’s week, Bada Naam Karenge should definitely be on your watchlist.
“Bada Naam Karenge” is now streaming on Netflix.
