Debutante Varsha Bharath delivers a raw and realistic coming-of-age drama that stands out as a delicate character study of a young girl. Rather than following a traditional plot, the film presents an exquisite collage of vignettes from Ramya’s life, tracing her journey from a 15-year-old schoolgirl to a more assured young woman in her late twenties.

Varsha portrays her protagonist with all her flaws—pimples and all—as she navigates the tumultuous phase of her life. Ramya dreams of vibrant happily-ever-afters, makes one questionable romantic choice after another, challenges her parents’ conservative views, and wrestles with understanding herself and her desires. Along the way, the film subtly highlights the challenges women face, doing so without ever feeling preachy.

This rare female-centric film never feels the need to remind you of its focus. Anjali Sivaraman masterfully embodies the complexities of a restless millennial, while Shanthi Priya offers a perfect counterbalance as an older woman who has come to terms with life’s realities. The almost fly-on-the-wall cinematography by Preetha Jayaraman, Jagadeesh Ravi, and Prince Anderson, combined with Radha Sridhar’s sharp editing and Amit Trivedi’s fresh, contemporary score, all come together to create a captivating vibe.
