Azad Bharath Review :-

India’s fight for independence is full of forgotten stories and brave people who rarely get recognition. Azad Bharath, directed by and starring Roopa Iyer, focuses on one such story. It follows India’s first woman spy, who killed her husband to protect Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, was later caught and tortured by the British, and eventually spent the rest of her life in silence and neglect.

The film begins in a modern fashion studio in London. Neera, played by Roopa Iyer, wrongly uses Netaji’s iconic cap in a design and is scolded by her Indian boss. This incident makes her curious, pushing her to learn about India’s freedom movement, Netaji’s role, and the Rani Jhansi Regiment.

From this point onward, the story covers the key moments of this period in history. It highlights Netaji’s strong trust in women as brave fighters, his belief that they could lead from the front, and the important part they played in the freedom movement. The film also shows how difficult it was to bring women into the army at a time when families and elders were unwilling to let them fight beside men and when war was considered a “man’s world.”

The movie also touches on the struggles within the Rani Jhansi Regiment, as the women face hardship in the forests and deal with their own personal wishes and conflicts. However, the film does not deeply explore Neera’s early life or what inspired her to join the army. Instead, her journey starts from her marriage to Shrikant Ranjan Das, a British Army officer and CID inspector. Their divided loyalties are shown, but their emotional conflict is not explored in great detail.

The way the film is made is not very effective. Inspiring speeches are meant to move the audience, but they fail to create strong emotions. The prison scenes showing Neera and other women being tortured are intended to shock, yet they feel unpleasant rather than powerful. Captain Neera’s fall into an unnoticed life and her death are shown too quickly, and the side story of the Neera living in London visiting the real Neera’s village to learn about her life does not leave much impact.

Azad Bharath Trailor :-

Roopa Iyer does an adequate job in the lead role, though at times her acting becomes a bit exaggerated. Shreyas Talpade plays Netaji with sincerity and mostly fits the character, but the uneven makeup is quite noticeable. Priyanshu Chatterjee performs honestly as well, even though his role doesn’t give him much scope.
