It’s not often that I find myself grinning from ear to ear throughout a movie, but Another Simple Favor pulls it off with its absurdity and casual disregard for the norms. From start to finish, the film keeps you entertained with its goofy antics, and the odd, often contentious dynamic between Emily and Stephanie is strangely satisfying yet cringeworthy. It’s a wild ride, and one that’s genuinely fun from beginning to end.
So, what’s Another Simple Favor all about? Murder and mayhem return, this time set against the stunning backdrop of Italy. Stephanie finds herself embroiled in Emily’s marriage, and things take a deadly turn when someone close to them winds up dead. Naturally, true-crime-obsessed Stephanie dives headfirst into unraveling the mystery, while uncovering more about Emily’s past than she ever expected. What follows is a shocking turn of events that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Naturally, with a movie set in Italy, we have to have Michele Morrone playing some sort of crime boss or mafia figure — and that’s exactly what he delivers here. There’s not much depth to his character, just a lot of shouting, scowling, and everyone calling him hot. It’s kind of hilarious how he’s typecast in this role, though I can’t help but be both amused and slightly bewildered by how many women seem to adore the idea of Morrone playing terrible people. It’s a strange fascination, to say the least!
What this wild film nails, though, is fully embracing its absurdity — and it does so with abandon. It sprints headfirst into chaos without ever pausing to acknowledge how ridiculous it all is, and honestly, that’s part of the charm. Sure, if you dig too deep into it, the film becomes illogical and frustrating — because, let’s face it, it is. But as a mindless, fun escape for a night with friends, it does its job perfectly. Beyond that? It’s really not much else, but sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re in the mood for.
Kendrick and Lively’s chemistry is easily the standout of this film, which veers from the unbelievable to the downright absurd with every passing minute. I couldn’t quite grasp the purpose of the 2+ hour runtime — it doesn’t really have anything to justify it. It’s just one ridiculous, extreme moment after another, like a fever dream that refuses to end. I’m not sure how to describe the insanity of it all; maybe a few martinis would make it easier to appreciate.
What truly works in the film’s favor, though, is its fantastic cast. They’re all clearly having a blast, and it’s more about enjoying their performances than trying to make sense of the chaos. Everyone brings their A-game, and with it being such a women-led film, it’s a fun, empowering time. It’s like a wild girls’ trip filled with drinks — you know you’re having a good time, but you have no idea how or why. By the end, you’re satisfied, but definitely a little dazed. It’s that experience, only taken up a few notches.
