Amsterdam Empire (Netflix) Review :-
In Amsterdam Empire, events spiral from one disaster to the next, seemingly leaving the “jackal” as the ultimate victor… or does it? Like many of Netflix’s current offerings, the series charts the rise and fall of a powerful dynasty centered on an influential man, showing how those who remain loyal behind the scenes often end up reaping the rewards. What stands out, however, is the tension between Jack and Betty. While spousal betrayals are hardly new territory, their dynamic is uniquely compelling. When your wife knows all your flaws and secrets, any act of betrayal must be executed with extreme caution—otherwise, as the saying goes, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
While the central dynamic between Jack and Betty is undoubtedly the most engaging part of the show, I couldn’t ignore the numerous glaring plot holes that either make no sense or are so blatant they become unintentionally humorous. The series struggles with an uneven tone, leaving you wondering why it attempts to juggle so many storylines at once, only to half-develop them all. On top of that, I’m growing weary of the tired trope of a scorned wife trying to claim everything from her wealthy, corrupt husband. The predictability of the plot borders on the ridiculous, and the fact that not one—but two—women are pitted against each other over this man is enough to make your blood boil.
With so many characters orbiting around Jack, it’s inevitable that many of them get little to no development—and that’s exactly the case here. Most exist solely to serve either Jack or Betty, with little purpose beyond that. While this could have made for a fun, if forgettable, watch, the story feels painfully repetitive given how often we’ve seen the same plotlines on Netflix. The overused tropes are everywhere, and the series makes no effort to disguise them, leaving the experience more frustrating than entertaining.
Amsterdam Empire (Netflix) Trailor :-
That said, the series does succeed in highlighting the dangers of greed and ambition, showing how some people are blinded by their own selfish desires. The dynamic between Jack, Betty, and Katya, however, feels underexplored—likely sidelined in favor of packing in as many contrived twists and turns as possible. The performances are decent, though most actors are stuck with one-dimensional roles; still, they manage to make the most of the material they’re given.
Final Thought
Amsterdam Empire is… adequate, if you come in with zero expectations and are just looking for over-the-top twists and turns. There were moments that held my attention, but overall, the story is far too predictable and clichéd to deliver any genuine excitement.
“Amsterdam Empire” is now streaming on Netflix.
