Review of Ambulance: In “Ambulance,” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II portrays William Sharp, a former soldier in dire need of money to cover his wife’s medical bills. He turns to his brother Danny, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, for assistance. However, Danny is deeply involved in the world of bank heists and convinces Will to join him in a high-stakes job promising substantial rewards. Despite his reservations, Will agrees, but their meticulously planned robbery takes a dangerous turn when a police officer is injured.

Cornered by law enforcement, the brothers find themselves in a desperate situation. In a bid to escape, they hijack an ambulance with EMT Cam Thompson, portrayed by Eiza Gonzalez, and the critically wounded officer aboard. Now faced with the daunting task of evading capture, they must also ensure the safety and survival of their unexpected hostages.

The film delves into the complexities of family loyalty, moral dilemmas, and the consequences of desperate actions. As the tension mounts, the characters are pushed to their limits, grappling with the weight of their decisions. With thrilling action sequences and intense performances from the cast, “Ambulance” delivers a gripping tale of survival and redemption amidst chaos and danger.

Drawing parallels to ‘Speed’ and ‘Bad Boys’ with shades of ‘Heat,’ this tense, character-focused thriller, penned by Chris Fedak, unfolds against the backdrop of Los Angeles. Helmed by Michael Bay, the film benefits from his signature blockbuster touch. Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II deliver compelling performances as Danny and Will, respectively, with both characters receiving ample development prior to the chaos. Bay’s expertise in orchestrating adrenaline-pumping chases keeps the tension palpable throughout, even during quieter moments.

While the film excels in maintaining suspense, Bay’s penchant for sweeping camera movements and frenetic editing occasionally detracts from the narrative. Despite toning down his typically bombastic visual style, Bay struggles to exercise the restraint necessary for more nuanced storytelling. Ironically, the emotional beats featuring Will, Danny, and Cam resonate more deeply than the grandiose action sequences. Despite its gripping premise and strong performances, ‘Ambulance’ falls short due to Bay’s inability to deviate from his trademark filmmaking approach.
