Amar Colony Review :-
Amar Colony is set in a charming wooden apartment block located in the misty hills of Shimla, a town celebrated for its stunning landscapes and colonial charm. The aging building possesses a rustic beauty, featuring creaking floorboards and intricate carvings that tell the stories of generations. Directed by Shimla-based filmmaker Siddharth Chauhan, this debut feature begins with a powerful scene where all the residents gather to eat in silence, as the camera sweeps around them, establishing the intimate and interconnected narratives that will unfold.
First, we meet Devki (Sangeeta Agrawal), a wheelchair-bound widow reliant on her son, who attends to her every need. Her life is filled with dependency and unfulfilled longing. Next is Meera (Nimisha Nair), an eight-month pregnant woman whose husband often neglects her, leading her to seek comfort in Devki’s son for intimacy and connection. Lastly, there’s Durga (Usha Chauhan), an elderly woman devoted to Lord Hanuman, who believes she is growing younger each day. While her husband runs a garment shop, hidden secrets loom, threatening to emerge through their grandson.

In Amar Colony, Siddharth Chauhan boldly explores the ever-changing dynamics within the building. The characters are trapped by their circumstances, unable to escape their current realities. As both writer and director, Chauhan deeply understands the alienation and profound loneliness that permeate this world. The film creates space for these characters, allowing their diverse physical and emotional needs to emerge authentically. When Meera begins a brief affair, she mistakenly believes her actions will remain hidden. However, the revelation unfolds subtly, seamlessly integrating into the colony’s web of secrets. The characters lead dual lives, with their public personas sharply contrasting the hidden truths that linger behind closed doors.
The film’s dark shots, low lighting, and careful camera work enhance the intensity of the drama. Mundane mysteries are transformed through surreal elements, including dreamlike sequences where Meera appears as Radha, the goddess of love. These visual choices deepen the narrative, adding layers of meaning and emotion.
However, the drama loses some of its impact in the latter half when Meera’s husband returns. His sudden reappearance feels rushed and lacks the depth seen in earlier scenes, creating a disconnect in understanding their evolving relationship. This abrupt shift in the narrative leaves little room for his character development, making his role feel forced and underexplored.
Despite its narrative flaws, Amar Colony shines in its depiction of complex characters and their hidden lives. The naturalistic performances and the director’s skill in allowing the actors to inhabit their roles authentically are standout elements of the film. Siddharth Chauhan establishes himself as a bold filmmaker with a deep understanding of loneliness and human connection. At just 77 minutes, the film presents a unique voice and offers a compelling look into the raw, unfiltered aspects of its characters’ lives. Overall, Amar Colony is a powerful debut that resonates with emotional authenticity and artistic confidence.
