In a recent interview, Kani Kusruti, the actress from Payal Kapadia’s film “All We Imagine As Light,” revealed how their producers had pooled funds to send them to the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival was a visual extravaganza, featuring numerous fresh faces gracing the prestigious red carpet. Among the highlights were the well-deserved recognition of films like “Shameless,” “All We Imagine As Light,” and “Sister Midnight.” However, amidst the glamour, Tillotama Shome and Saba Azad shed light on the challenges faced by small Indian films to make it to Cannes.
On the other hand, Kani Kusruti, the Malayalam actor and one of the leads in “All We Imagine As Light,” also shared their journey, acknowledging the efforts of their producers in saving up funds for the occasion.

In a recent interview with News 18 Showsha, Kani addressed the concerns raised by Tillotama Shome about independent films. She remarked, “Our producers supported us. Since our film was in one of the main categories, they managed to gather the necessary funds for us to attend. However, I’m uncertain about the challenges faced by others.”
Expressing her wish for a more robust support system, Kani emphasized the financial constraints faced by producers of independent films, who struggle to secure funding for their projects.
Reflecting on their experience at Cannes, Kani recounted their two-day stay, made possible by the reserved funds from their producers. She also highlighted the similar predicament faced by her friend and “Shameless” star, Tanmay Dhanania, during the conversation.
She remarked, “Even Tanmay expressed similar sentiments. He’s associated with the film in which Anasuya Sengupta has acted. When the announcement was made that ‘Shameless’ was included in the festival lineup, he highlighted the misdirection of resources and the misrepresentation of celebrities attending the festival.”
For those unfamiliar, just a few days ago, the actress from “Sir” reflected on the significant achievements of independent films at Cannes. She shared a lengthy post on her social media platform, questioning the funding of these films, the challenges of completing them within budget constraints, and how actors managed to finance their trips to Cannes to proudly bring home the accolades.
