The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been striving to rebuild trust with fans by delivering the content they eagerly anticipate. Following several projects that fell short, Deadpool & Wolverine successfully revitalized the MCU, grossing $1.3 billion worldwide. Now, after such a cultural phenomenon, what’s next? Enter a series featuring a formidable witch who defies convention as the unyielding protagonist. Agatha Harkness steps into the spotlight, unveiling the unexplored realm of witches within the MCU.
Jac Schaeffer, deeply involved in writing and directing, brings us Agatha All Along, a meticulously crafted series, as evidenced by its first four episodes. The MCU’s trend of short mini-series seems to be a thing of the past (thanks to Kevin Feige!). Instead, we’re now delving into character development, lingering with them, and exploring their complexities, reminiscent of the MCU’s earlier days. Starring the delightful Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, the show unfolds as a multi-dimensional tale that begins in Wanda’s imagination but swiftly forges its own narrative path. There’s ample ground to reshape and explore, especially for MCU fans unfamiliar with the comics, and Schaeffer skillfully avoids spoon-feeding the audience.
“Women telling women’s stories” may sound cliché, but it resonates powerfully in Agatha All Along. With three female directors, a woman creator, and a cast of formidable women (Debra Jo Rupp—kudos for your outstanding performance!), the series transcends the typical superhero fare. As one character aptly puts it, “A witch is a woman who lives on her own terms,” underscoring that this narrative celebrates unapologetic, powerful women—not merely witches.
Kathryn Hahn shines brilliantly as Agatha, effortlessly transitioning from her no-nonsense detective persona to the singing, menacing Harkness, portraying a wide spectrum of emotions. What sets Agatha All Along apart is its profound focus on emotion over magic. The series delves deep into tragic emotions rather than superficial exploration. Agatha, once accused of sacrificing her son for the book of the damned, now grapples with unexpected responsibilities, including a mysterious boy (the mystery surrounding Joe Locke’s identity is intriguing and promises a significant reveal for the plot). The beauty of the writing lies in Agatha’s unwavering portrayal as a villain, even when she takes center stage as the show’s protagonist.

Moreover, while Agatha All Along effectively incorporates organic queer undertones, there seems to be some restraint. Perhaps with the new R-rating, future episodes will allow the show to evolve further. With blood now permissible in the MCU, the creative possibilities are boundless. However, it’s crucial to bear in mind that we’re only four episodes into the series, and the MCU has a track record of stumbling towards the end. Some viewers might find the tone of the first episode diverging significantly from the usual MCU formula. The early arrival of a Halloween-like atmosphere and the artificial feel of The Witches Road sets may need refinement. Here’s hoping for enhancements by the fifth episode.
