Fast forward to the early 2020s, and we continue to witness a proliferation of erotic romance films and series, indicating that this subgenre remains popular. Among these, the After Movies stand out as a series comprising five films adapted from four novels by author Anna Todd.
Following the success of the initial film, After, released in 2019, the series gained momentum, culminating in its conclusion in 2023. Based on the Wattpad novel series of the same name, After chronicles the unconventional love story of Tessa Young and Hardin Scott, two young adults who find themselves drawn to each other despite their differences.
The subsequent films, After We Collided, After We Fell, and After Ever Happy, each adapted from Todd’s novels, continued to explore the tumultuous relationship between Tessa and Hardin. Meanwhile, the fifth and final installment, After Everything, delves into the latter part of the fourth novel, offering a conclusion to their passionate yet troubled romance. In this film, Hardin embarks on a journey of self-reflection as he contemplates life without Tessa.
With a runtime of around 90 minutes, After Everything primarily focuses on Hardin’s endeavor to write a second novel following the success of his debut, After. While audiences anticipate a satisfying resolution to Hardin and Tessa’s story, After Everything falls short of expectations.
Over the years, the couple has been criticized for their toxic dynamic, and viewers may hope for the film to present a compelling argument for their reconciliation. However, After Everything fails to deliver on this front, leaving much to be desired in terms of character development and resolution.
The film predominantly focuses on Hardin’s past, delving into the narrative of how he once negatively impacted another girl’s life as a result of a bet, mirroring his actions with Tessa.
The storyline primarily revolves around Hardin’s journey towards reconciliation with his former friend as he grapples with remorse and attempts to amend his past mistakes. Unfortunately, there is scant exploration of Tessa’s life, particularly her experiences in New York, which contrasts with the depth provided in the novels. While After Everything suggests that Tessa has moved on and is content with her life, the film’s concluding moments present an unexpected twist, leaving viewers puzzled.
In the film’s climax, there’s a sense of discord, whether due to the perceived lack of chemistry between Hardin and Tessa (portrayed by Hero and Josephine) or the repetitive cycle of conflict followed by reconciliation, often involving sexual encounters.
Both Hardin and Tessa are portrayed as deeply flawed characters who fail to address or rectify their past mistakes. Despite Hardin’s claims of personal growth, there’s minimal visual evidence of his supposed transformation in his relationship with Tessa, making it challenging for viewers to buy into his character development. As a result, After Everything feels like a contrived conclusion to Hardin and Tessa’s story, leaving audiences with a sense of forced closure and little resolution.
