Aema tests your patience at times, with the arrogant veteran Hee-ran bruising her ego and bullying newcomer Ju-ae, who simply dreams of becoming a star admired by all. The series dives deep into the layered challenges women face in the 1980s film industry—and even today—highlighting fierce rivalries in a ruthless, cutthroat world. Spanning just six episodes, the show is sometimes darkly humorous but mostly uncomfortable, portraying Ju-ae’s sacrifices to achieve stardom, while Hee-ran, a seasoned actress, grapples with rejection and a shallow script focused solely on selling sex.
What truly captivates are the performances. This marks the debut for both Bang Hyo-rin and Ju-ae, with Hyo-rin proving her talent through a fiery, determined, yet vulnerable portrayal that’s a joy to watch. Meanwhile, Lee Hanee delivers a memorable performance as Hee-ran, adding depth to a character often dismissed as merely “sexy.” The series reveals how Hee-ran must be tough and no-nonsense to survive in an industry full of predators waiting to exploit her vulnerability.
The story is both insightful and mischievous, though it can feel quite chaotic at times. While it may occasionally become overwhelming, the series does a commendable job of exposing the harsh realities female actors face daily. I couldn’t help but wonder if there’s a bitter irony in Ju-ae having to expose herself to land a role—both within the story and in real life. Despite this, Aema isn’t as racy as one might expect, with few nude scenes, and I didn’t find it particularly funny, though some moments do linger emotionally.

Though it tests your patience at times, I found myself appreciating the actors who bring these difficult characters to life—actors I recognize from various roles, now portraying women in deeply vulnerable situations. The series can be truly eye-opening. At its core, it’s the actresses who breathe life into the story, making every minute worthwhile. Even in their most fragile moments, Lee Hanee and Bang Hyo-rin shine brilliantly, thanks to their outstanding performances.
Beyond exposing the injustices faced by women in the film industry, the series also shines a light on the darker side of filmmaking, where producers often override directors’ visions to push the most sensational—and disturbing—content. Koo Jung-ho’s obsession with showcasing breasts on screen serves as a sharp critique of many modern films and shows that prioritize sex over meaningful story development.
