Ad Vitam (Netflix) Review :-
The idea of a man with a child on the way trying to protect a “national secret” and being utterly SHOCKED when the bad guys come after him never fails to amaze me. In Netflix’s French action film Ad Vitam, there’s a moment early in the story where you can’t help but feel a sense of disgust for the protagonist, Franck. He knowingly puts his very pregnant wife’s life in danger by making a reckless decision—all in the name of, as the antagonist puts it, wanting to be a hero.

The film explores Franck’s past and how it continually impacts his present, with a dangerous secret constantly hanging over him. One of the great things about recent French action films is that they’re fast-paced, violent, and ultimately forgettable. You watch them, enjoy the thrill, and forget about them as soon as they’re over. However, this 2025 film starts off with a high-octane action sequence but eventually slows down with a lengthy, unnecessary flashback. The film tries hard to make us emotionally invested in Franck’s motivations, but instead, it drags on and loses its momentum, leaving me feeling bored and disengaged for a long stretch.

The film would have been stronger if it had focused more on the action rather than trying to make us emotionally invested in its characters. Guillaume Canet is excellent as the fit and capable action hero, effortlessly leaping from one rooftop to another. The movie would have benefited from embracing this aspect fully, but instead, it veers into unnecessary backstory and tries to be something it’s not. While I’ll give the film credit for showing a sense of camaraderie between the characters with a shared past, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
Canet and Stéphane Caillard deliver strong performances, especially during the action sequences. Their chemistry is natural and entertaining, helping to maintain a fun pace throughout the film. Johan Heldenbergh also shines in his role, but with a plot this predictable and cliché, it’s hard to feel any real connection to the characters. You can see exactly where the film is headed, and whether you enjoy the ride depends on how invested you are in the action.
Ad Vitam (Netflix) Trailor :-
Final Thought
This French action film is decent but ultimately forgettable. It loses momentum when it shifts focus from high-octane action to exploring the brotherhood from Franck’s past. It’s unclear what the film is trying to achieve, as it fails to emotionally engage the audience and doesn’t deliver the level of action you’d expect. Overall, it’s a rather confusing watch.
“Ad Vitam” is now streaming on Netflix.
