Abandoned Man (Netflix) Review :-
This Turkish film explores finding hope in the most unlikely circumstances, showing how love and family can sometimes heal even the deepest wounds. That said, Abandoned Man doesn’t shy away from revealing that family can also be the source of many of those wounds, with plenty of pain both given and received.
Baran seems to have the worst luck imaginable—nothing ever goes his way. While I sympathize with his struggles, the constant barrage of misfortune can feel overwhelming at times. It’s not so much about realism but more about the relentless timing, which makes it hard to fully invest in the story. Eventually, the endless stream of trauma starts to feel forced, as if the film is demanding tears without giving a meaningful reason.
That said, Baran’s relationship with his niece Lydia is a bright spot in this otherwise heavy tale. Their bond feels genuine and heartfelt, making the watch somewhat more bearable. At moments, I half-expected a car to fall on him given all the bad luck he endures. Thankfully, after that initial wave of hardship, things begin to improve as Baran finds support in his chosen family. Lydia’s presence gives him the strength to face life’s challenges, and these heartfelt moments stand out as some of the film’s best.
That said, I found myself a bit unsure about the film’s central conflict and overall pacing. The first half drags, making it tough to stay engaged, while the ending feels unsatisfying because the story seems to lack a clear conflict. Although the sweetness of Lydia and Baran’s relationship is touching, it’s not enough to carry the film forward. The narrative feels scattered and inconsistent, leaving the experience half-baked. By the time you start getting into the rhythm, the film is already over, which is disappointing.
Additionally, some plot developments feel a bit too convenient. Baran’s missing piece comes across as simply Musa dropping exposition and revealing a bag of easy opportunities, which feels odd and somewhat unbelievable. In reality, would anyone be handed chances as effortlessly as Baran is here? While I’m not suggesting he should face even more hardship, this overly simplistic explanation weakens the story’s impact and credibility.

The performances are decent, though occasionally they come across as somewhat lacklustre. Mert Ramazan Demir as Baran can be inconsistent, at times appearing a bit stiff. Similarly, Ercan Kesal’s portrayal of Musa feels flat, as if he’s reluctant to be on screen. In contrast, Ada Erma shines, bringing a much-needed touch of innocence and warmth to an otherwise bleak story.
Final Thought
Abandoned Man works as a one-time watch but ultimately feels unsatisfying. The pacing is uneven, and the plot’s explanations don’t quite add up—real life rarely hands out fairy godmothers to fix problems. That said, the heartfelt relationship between Baran and Lydia is genuinely sweet and provides a glimmer of hope that keeps you engaged.
