A Widow’s Game (Netflix) Review :-

In A Widow’s Game, a young woman becomes the prime suspect when her husband dies under mysterious circumstances. Though intended as a thriller, the film’s confusing structure undermines the suspense. From the very beginning, it’s clear that Maria, or Maje, is likely involved in Arturo’s death. Portrayed as an unfaithful woman unable to resist multiple affairs, she immediately earns the audience’s distrust. There’s a hint she might be struggling with mental health issues, but the film never fully explores or clarifies this aspect.

The film spends considerable time exploring Maje’s motives and actions, yet never delves deeply enough to fully understand her. While the premise is inherently thrilling, it somehow falls short of delivering the impact you’d anticipate. Rather than building genuine suspense, the story feels more like a straightforward chase, watching two criminals stumble and slip up, with very little mystery involved. As noted earlier, the film is certain Maje is the killer—the real challenge is simply proving it in court.

What stood out most to me were the motivations and reasoning of both Maje and Salvador. Watching these two plan and carry out a murder with such unsettling ease is both fascinating and chilling. Ivana Baquero delivers a captivating performance as Maje, portraying her with a cold, unnerving precision. You can’t help but feel wary of a woman who casually spins cruel lies without a second thought—no one around her is truly safe.

Opposite her, Tristán Ulloa plays Salvador as a desperate, pitiable man caught in a midlife crisis. While you sympathize with him to some extent, it’s clear he’s spiraling. As Eva points out, most people in his position don’t resort to murder—they get a tattoo instead. Yet, the film leaves much unexplored about how Salvador so quickly crossed that line into violence. Still, I appreciated the glimpses into his relationship with his mother, which adds valuable depth to his character.

Then there’s Eva, a character we barely get to know. Much of the police investigation unfolds simply because the two foolish murderers can’t stop talking about their crime on the phone. While tapping their conversations and having them spill all the details makes solving the case feel a bit too easy, it’s passable. What’s more puzzling is the subplot about Eva’s child having behavioral issues—this detail is introduced but never revisited or developed, leaving its purpose unclear and ultimately forgotten.

Final Thought

I enjoyed watching A Widow’s Game, though I found the blend of documentary and fictional storytelling a bit confusing. The styles sometimes felt at odds, which diluted the mystery at times. Still, what stood out most for me were the strong performances and the complex, layered characters.
