The trailer for the romantic comedy “A Family Affair” was released on Wednesday, showcasing Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King in lead roles. Produced by the team behind “Anyone but You,” the film follows Zara Ford (Joey King) as she uncovers her single mother Brooke’s (Nicole Kidman) affair with her self-absorbed movie star boss, Chris Cole (Zac Efron). The trailer promises a delightful mix of humor and heartfelt moments, including a tense confrontation between Zara and her mother. “I am starting to feel things that I never thought I would feel again, not since your father died,” confesses Brooke, prompting a sharp response from Zara: “No. You did not just say that.”
The official synopsis reads, “A surprising romance sets off comedic consequences for a young woman (Joey King), her mother (Nicole Kidman), and her movie star boss (Zac Efron) as they navigate the complexities of love, sex, and identity.”
This marks the third collaboration between Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman, following their work in The Paperboy (2012) and the upcoming film The Butler. Leading the cast is Joey King, renowned for her portrayal of Elle Evans in Netflix’s Kissing Booth trilogy. Additionally, Zac Efron makes his return to Netflix after his compelling performance as Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, along with his reality show Down to Earth. Notably, Nicole Kidman previously starred in Netflix’s The Prom.
Originally scheduled for release in November 2023, A Family Affair was postponed to 2024 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Directed by Richard LaGravenese and penned by Carrie Solomon, the film is produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, with Michelle Morrissey, Alyssa Altman, and Solomon serving as executive producers. Set to debut on June 28, A Family Affair also features Liza Koshy and Kathy Bates in pivotal roles.
