In 2006, the entire nation witnessed the battle for life of five-year-old Prince from Kurukshetra as he fell down a 60-foot-deep borewell. Director and writer Gabriel Vats crafts his movie ‘Gauraiya Live’ around a similar incident in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, with Raja Bhoj narrating the story. It unfolds as a survival drama centered on young Gauraiya (Ada Singh), who resides at a construction site with her father, Rampal (Omkar Das), mother (Seema Saini), elder sister (Riddhi Gupta), and younger brother (Aarav Rangare). However, the film’s focus neither dwells on her fight for survival nor the rescue mission. The first half delves into Gauraiya’s background and her family’s challenging circumstances, while the latter part highlights the callousness of humans even amidst a tragedy.
The narrative aims to convey a message about the realities faced by the haves and have-nots. It portrays the hardships of the socio-economically disadvantaged population, the class divide, and societal evils such as dowry. Additionally, it sheds light on how wealthy builders, politicians, and the education system fail those on the fringes of society. The film effectively communicates how powerful individuals attempt to conceal their shortcomings by providing education, housing, and financial aid to those who are marginalized. However, it falls short in terms of storytelling, execution, and treatment.
Running for 111 minutes, the screenplay maintains a steady pace, but the frequent flashbacks disrupt its flow and become repetitive, especially as they reappear during the songs. The climax, focusing on the rescue mission led by the armymen and Rampal’s coworkers to save Gauraiya, concludes in the final 10 minutes.
Omkar Das delivers a compelling performance as the conflicted father torn between his love for his children and the struggle to make ends meet. Ada Singh, portraying the protagonist, also shines despite having limited screen time. The film’s conclusion, highlighting statistics and examples of young children enduring suffering due to negligence and unsafe construction sites, leaves a lasting impact.
While ‘Gauraiya Live’ harbors good intentions and a meaningful message, a more compelling story and narrative execution could have elevated its impact.
