27 Nights (Netflix) Review :-
27 Nights is a refreshing and engaging film inspired by real-life events, exploring themes of aging and personal freedom. Martha emerges as an unconventional, free-spirited woman who treats life as a celebration, even at 83. Unconcerned with others’ opinions, she embraces life to the fullest—recklessly spending money, investing in random ventures, welcoming a series of young lovers with questionable motives, and indulging in constant partying.
However, Martha’s lifestyle becomes a source of concern for her daughters, who believe her age is finally catching up with her and insist she needs supervision. Without her consent, they commit her to a psychiatric clinic, citing dementia based on flimsy and largely meaningless reports.
Enter Casares, a court-appointed expert tasked with determining whether Martha should regain her freedom or remain confined for the rest of her life.
The film does an excellent job of maintaining a spontaneous, lively atmosphere, aided by a brisk pace and engaging background music. From the very beginning, it exudes a whimsical charm that mirrors the free-spirited nature of its protagonist, Martha. In contrast, Casares serves as the straight-laced, principled figure tasked with uncovering the truth. The case is high-profile, with Martha’s daughters determined to prove she is unfit to manage her finances, while Martha simply wants to live life on her own terms.
The story raises thought-provoking questions about aging and personal freedom: at what point, if ever, does someone lose the right to enjoy life? And if a person has spent decades earning their wealth, shouldn’t they have the liberty to spend it as they please? While the film doesn’t offer a definitive answer, it skillfully delivers a resolution that feels satisfying for all parties involved.
