Renowned for portraying the role of Lord Ram in the iconic TV series Ramayan, Arun Govil entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi on March 18, 2021. Contesting from the Meerut constituency in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP leader initially faced a challenging battle but ultimately clinched the victory.
Arun Govil’s Election Verdict
Arun Govil, initially behind in the race, ultimately triumphed over Samajwadi Party candidate Sunita Verma. As per data from the Election Commission of India, Arun Govil secured victory with a margin of approximately ten thousand votes.
The acclaimed Ramayan actor garnered 546,469 votes, while Samajwadi Party contender Sunita Verma received 535,884 votes, and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Devvrat Tyagi secured 87,025 votes.
The electoral battle between BJP’s Arun Govil and Samajwadi Party leader Sunita Verma in Meerut was notably intense. The voting process on April 26 saw a turnout of 58.70 percent of eligible voters.
About Meerut’s Past Election Results
In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Rajendra Agarwal of the BJP secured victory in this region, amassing 586,184 votes, surpassing Haji Mohammad Yaqoob from the BSP by a narrow margin of 4,729 votes. Haji Mohammad Yaqoob secured second place with a total of 581,455 votes.
The Meerut Lok Sabha Constituency encompasses areas from both Meerut and Hapur districts and is among the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
